Atelier McClane, Black Books, Daily Life
Atelier McClane, Black Books, Daily Life
From October 20 to December 29, Lendroit éditions hosts Atelier McClane for the exhibition Black Books, Daily Life and celebrates the launch of a limited-edition publication of the same name. This highly anticipated event invites visitors to explore the duo's distinctive artistic approach and their reflections on modern life.
Since their founding in 2013, Atelier McClane—comprised of Julia Crinon and Hugo Marchal—has carved a unique path in the art world with their four-handed drawing technique. The duo’s synchronized style forms the foundation of their collective identity. Beyond drawing, they have expanded into screen printing, self-publishing, installations, and poster creation, continually exploring new artistic mediums and distribution systems. This spirit of experimentation has connected them with alternative art scenes and themes, enriching their body of work.
In Black Books, Daily Life, Atelier McClane holds up a mirror to society. Their work examines labor, individuality within standardized systems, and structures of domination. Through a striking black-and-white palette, precise linework, and the use of collage, their symbolic imagery offers multiple layers of interpretation, inviting viewers to engage deeply without feeling dictated to.
The exhibition space reflects their ever-evolving practice. Recycled materials embodying the duo's DIY ethos are transformed into functional furniture for displaying their editions. Visitors can explore their publications while immersing themselves in a backdrop reminiscent of the McClane studio—an environment that seamlessly merges daily life with creative exploration.
Black Books is both a nod to the literary inspirations behind their work and a space for their visual experiments. The exhibition underscores their commitment to art as an ongoing process, where personal experience and collective creation meet, resulting in a dynamic, living showcase of their multidisciplinary output.
