Be Water My Friend – by Rafael Bernardo
Do posters still possess the power to captivate? Can they weave an ongoing narrative, akin to a "Poster Novel," as initially envisioned?
Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences reflects on a rich and dynamic tradition of poster design. From Uwe Loesch's iconic corrugated cardboard posters in 1968, to the typographic brilliance of Helfried Hagenberg, Fons Hickmann, and Andreas Uebele, and onward to the contemporary creations of talented students, some of which transcend into the realms of digital and augmented reality.
A selection of these posters showcased in this volume has transcended the confines of the university, finding homes in prestigious collections like MoMA in New York and the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich. Renowned for their exemplary design, many have garnered numerous accolades.
Now, these posters are curated together: "Das Plakat isst eine Fläche" (a German play on words meaning "The poster eats/is a surface"). Texts and images are presented on a continuous strip, akin to a galley proof, to be later cut and bound into a book and poster novel.
This publication encompasses posters from Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences since 1968, featuring works by a plethora of artists including Inga Albers, Heribert Birnbach, Dieter Fuder, Wolf Erlbruch, Hilde Gahlen, Tino Graß, Fons Hickmann, Holger Jacobs, Wilfried Korfmacher, Anika Kunst, Laurent Lacour, Uwe Loesch, Alexander Mainusch, Jens Mller, Stephanie Passul, Charlotte Rohde, Lilo Schfer, Thomas Spallek, Philipp Teufel, Andreas Uebele, Piotr Zapasnik, and many others.
