Cairo's Plaster Casts – Luc Merx

Cairo's stucco workshops were part atelier, part showroom: their walls served as catalogues of ornament in which Belle Époque decoration meets pop culture, with acanthus leaves next to Mickey Mouse. Luc Merx photographed these now vanished spaces. Essays by thirteen authors place them in the context of Egypt's colonial past, modernity and identity.
