Sly Morikawa's photobook Devotion offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the Sanja Matsuri festival in Tokyo's Asakusa district, capturing the seldom-seen world of yakuza families. Through her lens, Morikawa documents the vibrant energy of the festival, where members of the yakuza openly display their intricate irezumi tattoos—a sight typically hidden from public view.

The Sanja Matsuri, held annually on the third weekend of May, is one of Tokyo's most significant Shinto festivals. It features lively mikoshi (portable shrine) processions and is renowned for its inclusive atmosphere, where even the yakuza participate openly, showcasing their full-body tattoos.

Morikawa's approach to photography is deeply personal and intuitive. She describes her work as a means to connect with the world around her, stating, "Photography pulls me out of myself. It allows me to connect with other people and maintain a sense of curiosity and openness" . This philosophy is evident in Devotion, where her images balance the rawness of the festival with a soft, almost dreamlike aesthetic.

Published in 2024 by Friend Editions, Devotion is a limited edition softcover book, measuring 18 x 25.5 cm and comprising 108 pages. Only 150 copies were printed, making it a coveted item for collectors and photography enthusiasts.
