Hollein Calling Architectural Dialogues

Hans Hollein (19342014), the sole laureate of Austria's Pritzker Prize (1985) and a self-proclaimed avant-gardist of the 1960s, demonstrated a meticulous curation of his body of work throughout his life. However, the reception of his work was frequently overshadowed by Hollein's formidable personality. "Hollein Calling: Architectural Dialogues" takes a contemporary perspective on the Hollein phenomenon. In conversation with the viewpoints of a younger generation, this book reassesses and reintroduces Hollein's ideas and designs into the current discourse.

The initial section presents interviews with 15 European architectural firms discussing their relationship with Hollein and his body of work. This ranges from profound familiarity or selective admiration of specific aspects to skepticism and critique. Themes like cultural identity, visual aesthetics, design methodologies, and architecture as an autonomous cultural production weave through these discussions. The subsequent section showcases a collection of Hollein's architectural works using sketches, models, photographs, prototypes, and documents sourced from the Archive Hans Hollein, Az W, and MAK in Vienna many of which are being published here for the first time. New contextualizing texts accompany these materials. The two segments are interconnected through a network of key terms, comprising relevant texts and images.
