Molecular Typography Laboratory by Kobi Franco: Redefining Experimental Typography
The Molecular Typography Laboratory by Kobi Franco is an innovative and speculative research project that pushes the boundaries of experimental typography. By examining the interplay between function and aesthetics as well as content and form, the project envisions Latin and Hebrew letters as possessing a molecular structure. This groundbreaking concept redefines the relationship between alphabets, languages, and design through an interdisciplinary approach that bridges design, science, and linguistics.
Exploring the Core of Molecular Typography
This comprehensive research spans over five years and includes more than 150 structured tests, each devised as a creative “game” where Franco establishes rules, scenarios, and participants. These experiments unveil 11 key themes, offering unique insights into typography:
- Foundations
- Language
- Gender
- Formula
- Weight
- 3D
- Gravitation
- Generative Research
- Color
- Word Play
- The Relationship Between Type and Image
The project’s findings are captured in a visually compelling book accompanied by four scholarly essays that explore the historical, cultural, and academic aspects of typography. For additional animated materials, visit themtlab.com.
A Unique Blend of Science, Language, and Design
